COUCH TIME WITH MY HUBBY
My husband Jim was off work two weeks during the holidays. Ever year his company, The Mitchel Group, shuts down and everyone gets exra time with their family. This year we used that time for marriage therapy. Sometimes life is so busy that you don't ever just sit down and talk. So we decided that each day we sit on the couch in the morning and read the Bible together and discuss our insights and applications. Afterwards we would read one day of the Love Dare book that was recommended from the movie Fireproof. After reading the days' love dare we would write out our response and then share it. Some days were difficult because they dealt with hard issues. But as we were open and honest about our feelings, we felt progress was being made.
Jim went back to work on Monday and we went back to our old routine. He does his Bible reading at 7:00 before work and I do mine around 7:30. I miss our couch time and the closeness it brought to our marriage relationship. Today we finished our reading of 1 John. It is a small book but has soooo much to meditate on. After reading it, we came to the conclusion that it is impossible for a Christian to hate people. If we have truly accepted God's love and forgiveness through Christ we will extend that same love and forgiveness to others. One of the chapters in the Love Dare book was also about forgiveness. It said that when we refuse to forgive we make ourselves a prisoner. That was eye-opening.
We have decided to move our couch time to 7 PM instead of AM. It will be nice to be with my hubby again even though it will be too dark to watch the birds eating at the feeders from my window. I guess I can have my coffee in the morning and enjoy bird watching and spend couch time with Jim in the evening.
If you would like to improve your relationship with your spouse, I highly recommend daily couch time.
Pat
